Derek de Lint stars as Bertrand de Roujay, the elder son of a wealthy and aristocratic family who have for generations held authority in France. When the Nazis invade France, and support the puppet government of Marshal Petan, Bertrand's father and his younger brother, Edmond, support their aims - hoping that they will bring about a strong France. They believe the real enemy to be communism, not Hitler and his followers. Bertrand however does not agree with them. He flees France, journeying through Spain and Portugal to eventually join with De Gaulle's Free French army in London. He plays an active part in the resistance struggle to free France from the Nazis. They hurry after Bertrand and try to destroy him.
When he gets on the plane going to France in order to join the partisans, Nazis already are waiting for him below. But the partisans kindle fires as a fascist mark on the air-strip and so have managed to warn him of the danger. He returns to London and finds his wife Jenny (Beatie Edney) asleep with a lover.
Bertrand is then captured by the Nazis and subjected to massive torture. When they transport him to the hospital, the partisans manage to rescue Bertrand. After the American army has freed France, Bertrand comes to the prefect, Charrier, who serves the Nazis and he deposes him. Interwoven within Bertrand's story are the lives of the women whom he loves and the story tells of the impact that he has on their lives. Some of them betrayed him, others rescued him from death.
