S ara (Tiba Tossijn), an 8-year old girl, lives together with her mum (Lisa de Rooy) and grandpa (Pieter Lutz). She suffers very much that she has no father. Sara saw him only in a photo in a family album. And then, she finds out her grandpa is reading a newspaper with his photo in it. The review tells about a well-known grand master Bob Hooke (Derek de Lint). Several times she has watched him on TV as well, but it has not been pleasant to her mum.
Sara gets acquainted with a new classmate, Victor (Rene Nijman), whose father owns a knick- knack store. On a visit to the store one day, she becomes enthralled with a chess board and its beautiful chess pieces. She asks Victor to explain to her how to play chess. The boy agrees with pleasure, he begins to read her the story of a fairy-tale queen who lives in a castle with a black and white floor. The white Queen explains that she must come up with a game to amuse her husband (Jack Wouterse) and keep him from going to war. Sara wants to have this chess set very much. But it is very expensive. Sara brings all her money to the store and becomes the owner of this chess set.
At home Sara begins to read the book about the white Queen. She starts to dream and soon finds herself in a chess magical palace. As Sara watches the white Queen, her subjects and members of the neighboring kingdom design the game, she realizes she is learning to play chess. Meanwhile the teacher announces to the pupils that a display of multi-board chess-play with the well-known grand master Bob Hooke will be held. It is necessary to find participants. All the children have desire to participate, but Sara wants it more than anybody else. The teacher is surprised, because the girl hasn’t show her worth. The teacher carries out a preliminary selection, and the citizens of the chess kingdom help Sara to win.
Sara and Victor are sent on the tournament. Sara comes there with her own chess-board, but they don’t permit her to use it. In the beginning, Sara is confused, but Bob Hooke gets quiet. The girl begins to play so well, that the grand master is surprised. The list of losers grows, and Sara does not surrender. Suddenly Victor feels bad, and Sara gives the game up and helps him to get home. Then she remembers with horror that she has forgotten her chess board in the hall, she rushes back, but the hall is empty and her chess board has disappeared. When the chess tournament is finished, Bob Hooke decides to return the chess set to the girl who playes so well. Sara runs home and meets the grand master near her house. He returns her chess board with a smile and leaves.
When his car passes along the street by Sara's house, Bob Hooke sees the woman he loved many years ago. He sees that she approaches Sara and begins to speak with her. He understands that this girl is his daughter. He asks the car driver to turn back. A touching meeting follows, and Sara runs into the house to thank the White Queen. When she runs out, she sees that the car has left. Sara goes across the road and sees that her mum sits with her father on the riverside beside one another. She comes to them and sits between them.
