Hedwig de la Fontaye grew in second half of 19-th century in rich and quiet domestic surroundings. Her mother has died. Further governess had her education. After termination of love to the artist Johan, which she refuses because of fear before the sex relations, she marries the notary Gerard. The marriage with him comes to complete disappointment because of coldness Gerard. Hedwig finds the consolation in the young friend Ritsaart (De Lint). He is pianist and she has got acquainted with him during his trip to England. After birth of the child, who has died soon, the psyche of Hedwig breaks. She runs in France, where she works medical nurse in hospital and becomes morphine addict. Then she gets in hospital, which lead nuns. Here sister Paula brings to her later knowledge, that rescue is not in "the cool lakes of death", and in the life.
