An unknown man comes into an asylum for the poor and gives an injection to an old woman. She dies. Then he takes a photo in a frame that is by her clock when he leaves. Determined Alec Hillsden, a British intelligence agent, and Waddington carry out the investigation of her death. They come to the doctor who did the autopsy. According to the doctor, the woman was ill, disabled. But the cause of her death was a poison injection.
Hillsden tells Waddington about the lost woman. Her real name was Caroline Wats, she was his former collegue in Berlin. Here Caroline was captured by the KGB and subjected to massive torture. When the Russians finally released her, she was little more than a vegetable. Hillsden wonders: so why kill her now?
At home Hillsden is harking back to his last meeting with Caroline, who he doted, before her departure in Berlin. She has offered to go in a castle, to see a room about which their friend Jock spoke. In this room were a thousand dead flies. Caroline was shocked at seeing this. She never could forget it.

—Second Episode—

Hillsden comes into the asylum for the poor and asks a state-registered nurse about last days of Caroline. She tells him about the photo that has disappeared.
Meantime Hillsden finds out that in Austria Caroline and her partner, Jock, came upon something very important. Hillsden was not told about it. He went to see Glanville, who worked in Austria. He wanted to find out from him who has rated Caroline and what secrets she knew.
After the session with Glanville, Hillsden comes back home, where in watching the newscast he learns about Glanville's death. The chief informs Hillsden that Glanville had a heart attack and that Hillsden was the last person who saw the man alive.

—Third Episode—
Runtime: 50 min

Hillsden gets acquainted with a charming woman who offers him work with them. He goes with her to France. Here Hillsden learns that London is looking for him because of the murder of the diplomat. He decides to turn traitor to get at the truth. Hillsden receives the new documents and flies to Moscow.
In Russia Hillsden meets with a KGB officer, Victor Abramov. Day and night he interrogates him, in Hillsden's cell and in his office. At last Abramov comes in Hillsden's cell and informs him that the authorities have decided to improve his conditions. He comes with Abramov to a country house. Unexpectedly Hillsden meets Jock here, who was Caroline's former colleague. Everybody thought that he was lost.
Hillsden asks Jock about Caroline. He wonders: who has sent her to Berlin, where the KGB captured her? Jock does not know about it. But according to him Caroline should clear up a superagent.

—Fourth Episode—
Runtime: 50 min

Abramov asks Hillsden to use his influence with Jock because he "pitches it strong". He agrees to help, but wants to have the information about Caroline's killer. But Abramov answers him that "it is not time yet".
Jock offers to take Hillsden to a party. He agrees, but calls Abramov. He with a smile informs him that Abramov knows all about it. Abramov has chosen the girls for this party.
While Hillsden talks with Russian Inga, Jock is with the other girl, Katia, in a bedroom. Unexpectedly he attacks her. When Jock opens the door, the girl lays on the bed with no traces of life. Hillsden rushes to call Abramov. Immediately he arrives and has ordered everybody to be silent about the accident here.
One night Hillsden comes back from a restaurant, Abramov's car stops alongside him. He asks Hillsden to get into the car. Abramov informs him that Katia is dead and the second girl has been sent to East Berlin. What happens to Jock? And Abramov asks Hillsden what he will do if he brings him face to face with Caroline's killer. Hillsden answers that he can not kill. But Abramov objects that the killer's name will revise Hillsden's opinion. He has written a word "JOCK". But Hillsden demands he give proof. Abramov quietly offers for him to ask Jock.
Hillsden learns from Jock that the chief sent Caroline to Berlin. Here she received ten revelatory photos from a man. She gave Jock nine of them. And Caroline kept last photo to the death. In this photo was the minister Bayldon and the KGB girl. Hillsden has understood that Jock gave the fatal injection to Caroline and he took a photo along, which stood on a table in the asylum for the poor.
When Jock has gone to sleep, Hillsden comes to him and burkes by his pillow...
