The film begins with a scene from the past. A young man, Alex, is expecting Lucy to be faithful and sees her in arms of another young man. The three of them leave to go home. Alex brings a car to a halt at a gate and Lucy goes to open it, but she is drunk and it does not open. Unexpectedly the car makes a move and the unfortunate girl falls with a shout…       25 years after. An Amsterdam diamond merchant of a ripe age, Alex Witsen, casually gets acquainted with a charming American girl, Lisa Parks. He has seen her when she quarreled with a man on quay, and then they get into the Alex’s car. He has taken her to the airport and she has kissed him at parting. After a time they again meet at an auction. Unexpectedly Alex has decides to sing her a love song and wins Lisa’s heart. They have return home together and Alex makes an offer of marriage. In the morning when a servant has come with breakfast, he sees the girl and the owner sleeping naked beside one another on his bed.       A priest marries them. Alex and Lisa are happy, but their fragile marital bliss is soon vershadowed by the morbid jealousy of Alex, who sees a potential rival in every man. He rips open Lisa's letters, pursues her everywhere. When Lisa goes in a gymnastic hall, he secretly follows her and sees the trainer embracing his wife. Alex is furious and rushes into the hall and finds out that he is imagining it. Lisa can not adduce any reason for Alex’s strange behaviour. When she a finds photo of the young girl who looks like her, she decides to begin the investigation. One day Alex finds Lisa on a golf course with a young man called Mickey Davis. He ask the girl to strike the ball. Lisa is awkward with the golf club and hits his leg with it. In confusion she tries to apologize. But Alex has a vision that scantily clad Mickey and Lisa make love. In his wild fury he turns on Mickey.       In the evening, Lisa tries to find out the truth about Alex’s past. She thinks that the reason for his strange behaviour has to do with the girl whose photo she found. But he is not completely comfortablein telling her. He says the girl has died and it was a long time ago. Then she asks that he at least apologize to Mr. Davis. Alex meets with Mickey and apologizes for letting his temper get the best of him. The next day Alex meets with him again. To heal himself and save his love, he finally asks Mickey to seduce his wife for money. Mickey agrees. It is fun for him, and he can receive a nice prize. One day Alex and Lisa go to a concert and meet "casually" with Mickey. Alex leaves them because of businesses. The young people have a good time.       At last Julia finds for Lisa the old police reports of a story, which has taken place 25 years ago with Alex, his friend Simon, and the girl, Lucy, who had died because of Alex’s action. Alex goes into a rage when hears about this story. He forbids Lisa to think about it. When Alex meets with Mickey to find out how is he getting on his wife, he admits, that feels uncertain what to do next. Then Alex offers to invite Lisa to an exhibition. She is an art expert.       At the exhibition Mickey wants to captivate Lisa with his knowledge, but understands he has nothing to show for it. Then he kisses her. From above Alex keeps a good look-out for them. He sees Mickey hold Lisa in his arms. It gives Alex much pain. Actually Lisa has become angry and has decided to leave the exhibition. Mickey apologizes to Lisa and ask her to dinner. They return to his home. Across the street Alex observes of them through field-glasses. He sees as Mickey tempts Lisa. When the vision of his jealousy disappears, he sees, that nothing's the matter and Lisa already is going to leave. She returns home, and seeing the Alex’s car at an entrance and she understands that he spyed on her again. Lisa sobs in a bathroom.       Alex is acollector of eotic paintingsand he dreams of buying an authentic Rembrandt etching. When he finds out that one will be sold at an auction, he goes there and makea a bid by phone.Meantime Lisa and Mickey hold a picnic in the forest. Here he makes a declaration of love. But Lisa explains to him with smile, that they are friends only. Exited Lisa return home and wants to make love with Alex. But he loses out at the auction and raises hell. A sense of loneliness invades Lisa and she comes to Mickey and makes love with him. Alex observes them in the field-glasses again. And his awful vision becomes reality.

The next morning Lisa announces to Alex that she is leaving him. He does not reprehend her unfaithfulness, but can not keep her. Alex comes to Mickey looking for Lisa. Unexpectedly Mickey gets the Rembrandt etching, which Alex dreamed of buying. He promises to give it to Alex if Lisa becomes free. The next morning Mickey comes to Lisa with a large bouquet of roses and declares his love. But she tells him that he should know whom she actually loves.       Lisa meets with bishop Simon West, Alex’s friend, who was involved in the story of 25 years ago. She asks him to tell the truth about Lucy’s death. And Simon says that 25 years ago that Alex had warm words with him and he cut Alex across the face with a bottle which damaged his ability to feel. Alex was not able to know his foot slipped off the brake and the car made a move and Lucy was killed. Alex took the blame upon himself. After hearing the truth from Simon, Lisa and Alex meet in the same church. She has found out the truth about the past of her husband, he realizes he has made a big mistake and decides to break with the past. They fly into each other's arms with impetuosity.
